ABOUT LICENSES
The Nitty-Gritty

what is licensing?
Licensing is simply a legal agreement that gives you (the client) permission to use my artwork in specific ways.
I still own the intellectual property, but you gain the rights to use, sell or reproduce the pattern under the terms we agree.
All of my designs are copyright protected, and licensing allows brands to use them on products for a set amount of time, in a set territory, and under either exclusive or non-exclusive rights.
You’ll always know exactly what you can use the pattern for — it’s all outlined clearly in the license agreement.

what is copyright?
Copyright is the legal protection that gives artists full control over how their original work is used.
It prevents others from copying, distributing, modifying or selling artwork without permission.

Exclusive & non-exclusive licenses
When you license a design, you can choose exclusive or non-exclusive use.
-
Lasts 2 years.
-
Multiple brands may license the same design — but never within your product category.
-
Example: if you license a pattern for bedding, another brand cannot use it for bedding, but they could use it for stationery or swimwear.
It’s a flexible, budget-friendly option that still protects your product range.
Exclusive;
-
The pattern is yours alone within your chosen category for 2 years.
-
No other brand can license it in that category during your agreement.
-
You also have the option to renew when the license ends.
It’s the best fit if you want a pattern to be a signature part of your brand.
